Myscript Stylus Keyboard

Selvy Penscript — Great Handwriting Recognition keyboard for iPad. Back in 2016 I told you about an awesome third-party keyboard for iPad called MyScript Stylus. The genius of this keyboard was that it allowed you to write by hand with a stylus and it would convert your scribbles into text as you wrote. It worked in every app, so there was none of that nonsense of writing in a different app and then copying. MyScript Stylus is a powerful and interactive input method which replaces the keyboard in all application requiring text entry such as web browsers, emails, calendars, spreadsheets, word processors, and many more.

I really, really like the idea behind MyScript Stylus. It’s a different sort of iOS keyboard that lets you write your words out with a finger rather than having to mess around with virtual keyboards. The only problem is that, in practice, it’s much slower to use.

Setting up MyScript Stylus is quick and easy; all you have to do is install it and give it the appropriate permissions, then it’ll show up as one of your keyboard options whenever you need to write anything. Actually using it is also easy, and it does a really good job of recognizing even my awful handwriting.

The gestures you can use to correct and edit (separating words, removing accidental spaces, etc) are pretty simple and intuitive as well, although I did run into issues with getting the “use two fingers to swipe and scroll back” feature to work. Still, it’s almost scary how effortless it is to write something out and have it displayed correctly.

As great as MyScript Stylus is though, it just doesn’t seem as functional as a regular keyboard. This isn’t a matter of it being more difficult to use or anything; it’s just faster to type than it is to write something out. Even with autocorrect pulling its usual shenanigans.

MyScript Stylus isn’t a practical replacement for the normal iOS keyboard, but it does what it does very well and is still worth a look.
